Even Babies Discriminate

The quote below is from a Newsweek article titled Even Babies Discriminate: A NurtureShock Excerpt.

If “black pride” is good for African-American children, where does that leave white children? It’s horrifying to imagine kids being “proud to be white.” Yet many scholars argue that’s exactly what children’s brains are already computing. Just as minority children are aware that they belong to an ethnic group with less status and wealth, most white children naturally decipher that they belong to the race that has more power, wealth, and control in society; this provides security, if not confidence. So a pride message would not just be abhorrent—it’d be redundant.

WOW!! Proud to be white is abhorrent! Proud to be a minority isn’t? I don’t understand how they could both be true. The article makes some valid points about how children will align themselves with other kids of their own race. I believe that’s only natural. What surprises me is that anyone is surprised by this.

The Debt Pledge

I saw a commercial this morning that struck me as very real. It was created by a group called Defeat the Debt. It shows a typical elementary classroom with the kids starting the pledge. But instead of the classic US pledge they say:

I pledge allegiance to America’s debt
And the Chinese government that lends us money
And to the interest for which we pay, compoundable
With higher taxes and lower pay
Until the day we die

Don’t get me wrong, the biggest beef I had with the Bush administration was the amount of money they spent. But that pales in comparison to what the Obamamites want to spend. And are spending.

Need directions?

A little boy was waiting for his mother to come out of the grocery store.

As he waited, he was approached by a man who asked, “Son, can you tell me where the post office is?”

The little boy replied, “Sure, just go straight down the street a couple of blocks and turn to your right.”

The man thanked the boy kindly and said, “I’m the new pastor in town, and I’d like for you to come to church on Sunday. I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.”

The little boy replied with a chuckle, “Awww, come on; you don’t even know the way to the post office!”

Retrieval Trip

I’m in Apalachacola, FL. I came down with my brother-in-law Dave to pick up his boat. We drove down last night and were up before dawn (almost). The boat is in the water at the dock right now. Last time she was in the water the transom cracked and just about sank the boat. The guy who did the repairs did a great job. If the weather is clear, and right now that’s iffy, we’ll go out and run the boat.

It’ almost 3 o’clock. Weather cleared enough to go. We were out an hour and a half or so when the thunder started. We weren’t very far out so we stayed. Then there was a flash of lightning. It was pretty far off but we headed back anyway. We were going full speed when the engine RPMs shot up. Dave yanked back on the throttle. He eased the throttle back up and we felt the prop start slipping. We had to idle the rest of the way in.

7:06 AM and we’re on our way home. I’ll post this once we’re back in cell coverage.

Some pictures from the trip. First up is a truck we saw on the way down.

The next two are of an alligator that was in the river. We figure it was about 9 or 10 feet long.

Garden Haul

Our garden is going great. The first photo is what Taylor and I harvested today. The second is our first (I think) watermelon. I put the scissors to give a sense of scale.

Planet of the Dead

The American debut of Doctor Who, Planet of the Dead is on BBC America tonight. I will try to “live blog” it. We’ve been having serious problems with BBCA lately so we plan on watching live instead of waiting till 30 minutes in.

Charter Cable screwed us again. We got 32 minutes in and BBC America dumped. It’s 10 o’clock and it’s still out. I called and they said it was the feed from the network. I said “Really? Then why is it only out on the DVR boxes?” “Oh, ummm, hold please.” Music … Static … Dial tone. GRRRR!!! Called back, talked for a bit, cable guy will be here at 10 AM.

Blackberry post

This post is being made using the newly public beta WordPress for Blackberry plug-in. Cool!!! The link I just made; I entered the “<” and “a” and when I hit the space it asked if I was inserting a link. Makes it super easy. This will be very handy when I have more than a tweet’s worth to say when I’m out and about. Which, honestly, isn’t that often. But still, I’ll post more now.
